Hope & Dreams

"Invest in your dreams, as they are the gateway to your future." Carl Jung

"And the sea shall grant each man new hope, as sleep brings dreams."
Christopher Columbus upon finding the new world, 1492

To accomplish great things we must not only act, but also dream,
not only plan, but also believe. Unknown

Don't let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do- Anonymous

"The journey is the destination."
Dan Eldon, American freelance photographer killed in Somalia

When You Wish Upon A Star
Writer: Leigh Harline; Lyrics: Ned Washington

When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires will come to you.

If your heart is in your dreams, no request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star as dreamers do.

Fate is kind, she brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of their secret longing.

Like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in and sees you thru
When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true

There's Always Tomorrow
by Johnny Marks

There's always tomorrow for dreams to come true,
Believe in your dreams come what may.
There's always tomorrow, there's so much to do,
And so little time in a day.

We all pretend the rainbow has an end,
And you'll be there my friend, someday.
There's always tomorrow for dreams to come true,
Tomorrow is not far away.

" We are such stuff that dreams are made of."
paraphrased from William Shakespeare from The Tempest

The Horsewoman's Prayer

The Horse's Prayer

Somewhere

Don't Cry for the Horses

Peter McCue

All the Pretty Horses

When I am old

Betwixt & Between-
not a poem, not a quote but too good not to include!

Can my friends come?

A Horse's Christmas Fable

The Horsewoman's Prayer
author unknown

Dearest God in Heaven,
Give me the strength to guide my horse, make my hands soft and my head clear.
Let my horse understand me and I him.

My heart you have blessed with a special love of these animals- let me never lose sight of it.
My soul you have gifted with a deep need for them, let that need never lessen.
Always let my breath catch as the sun gleams on an elegant head.
Always may my throat tighten at the sound of a gentle nicker.

Let the scent of fresh hay and a new bag of grain always be sweet to me.
Let the warm touch of a soft nose on my hand always bring a smile.
I adore the joy of a warm day on the farm.
The grace and splendor of a running horse, the thunder of it's hooves,
makes my eyes burn and my heart soar, let it always be so.

Dearest God,
Grant me patience, for horses are harnessed wind and wind can be flighty.
Let me not frighten or harm then, instead show me ways to understand them.
When I pass from this world, send my soul to no Heaven without them,
for this love you have given me graces my existence
and I shall cherish it, and praise You for it, for all time.
Amen

Somewhere
Stanley Harrison

Somewhere in time's own space
there must be some sweet pastured place
where creeks sing on and tall trees grow,
some paradise where horses go.
For by the love that guides my pen,
I know great horses live again.

The Horse's Prayer
unknown

Feed me, water and care for me, and when the day's
work is done, provide me with a shelter, a clean dry
stall large enough for me to lie down in comfort.

Talk to me, your voice often means as much to me
as the reins. Pet me sometimes that I may serve you
more gladly and learn to love you. Shoe me properly
that I may serve you in comfort. Never strike, beat
or kick me when I don't understand what you want,
but give me the chance to understand you.

And finally oh master, when my youthful strength
is gone do not turn me out to starve or freeze, or sell
me to some cruel owner to be slowly tortured or
stoned to death, but do thou, my master take my life
in the kindest way, and your God will reward you
here and hereafter.

You will not consider me irreverent if I ask this in
the name of Him who was born in a stable.
Amen

Don't Cry for the Horses
by Brenda Riley-Seymore

Don't cry for the horses
That life has set free
A million white horses
forever to be.

Don't cry for the horses
Now in God's hands
As they dance and they prance
To a heavenly band.

They were ours as a gift
But never to keep
As they close their eyes
Forever to sleep.

Their spirits unbound
On silver wings they fly
A million white horses
Against the blue sky.

Look up into heaven
You'll see them above
The horses we lost
The horses we loved.

Manes and tails flowing
They gallop through time
They were never yours
They were never mine.

Don't cry for the horses
They will be back someday
When our time has come
They will show us the way.

Do you hear that soft nicker
Close to your ear?
Don't cry for the horses
Love the ones that are here.

Peter McCue
unknown

Ain't you never heard what Peter done?
Run the quarter mile in :21
And he run it backwards in :20 flat;
Why, stranger, where have you been at?

What else could he do, this Peter McCue?

He could gallop the range with tireless legs,
He could build a fire and scramble the eggs;
Though he never learned to subtract or divide,
He was mighty good when he multiplied!

All the Pretty Horses
Traditional, circa 1860s and sung to me by my mother in the 1960s

Hush-a-bye don't you cry,
Go to sleep-y, little baby.
When you wake you shall have
All the pretty little horses.
Blacks and bays, dapple grays,
Coach and six white horses.
Hush-a-bye don't you cry,
Go to sleep-y, little baby.

When I am old...
-Unknown

I shall wear diamonds
And a wide brimmed straw hat
With silver and leather on it
and I shall spend my social security
On white wine and carrots
And sit in the alley of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.

Gryphon

I will sneak out
in the middle of a summer's night
And ride the chestnut mare
Across the moonstruck meadow.
If my old bones will allow.

When people come to call I will smile and nod
As I walk them past the gardens to the barn
And show, instead, the beauty growing there
In stalls fresh-lined with straw.
I will shovel and sweat and
Wear hay in my hair as if it were a jewel.

And I will be an embarrassment to all
Who look down on me.
They've not yet found the peace in being free
To love a horse as a friend,
A friend who waits at midnight hour
With nuzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be
When I am Old.

Prayer for the Animals
Albert Schweitzer

Hear our humble prayer, O God,
for our friends the animals, especially for animals
who are suffering; for any that are hunted
or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry;
for all that will be put to death.

We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them we ask
a heart of compassion and gentle hands
and kindly words.

Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals and
so to share the blessings of the merciful.
Amen

Prayer for the Animals
Saint Francis of Assisi

God Our Heavenly Father,

You created the world to serve humanity's needs and to lead them to You. By our own fault we have lost the beautiful relationship which we once had with all your creation. Help us to see that by restoring our relationship with You we will also restore it with all Your creation. Give us the grace to see all animals as gifts from You and to treat them with respect for they are Your creation. We pray for all animals who are suffering as a result of our neglect. May the order You originally established be once again restored to the whole world through the intercession of the Glorious Virgin Mary, the prayers of St. Francis and the merits of Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ Who lives and reigns with You now and forever.

Amen.

Canis Fidelis
Unknown

He is your friend, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love.
He will be yours, faithful and true,
to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

Lessons our dogs can teach us
Unknown

Run, romp, and play daily!
When loved ones come home, always run to great them.
Take naps, stretch before rising.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
When you're happy, wag your entire body.
Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you're not.
Whenever scolded, run back and make friends.
Accept people, love without judging.
If you want what lies buried, dig until you find it!

Purrfect Balance
Joy Braswell

Dogs were put on this earth to make us feel
we are the center of the Universe, the masters.
Cats were put on this earth to remind us that we are not
and that we need to get over ourselves.

The Missing - Eowyn's Song
from TLOTR: The Two Towers
music by Howard Shore, lyrics by Philippa Boyens & David Salo

She never watched the morning rising,
Too busy with the days first chores
But oft she would watch the sun's fading
As the cold of night crept across the moors
And in that moment she felt the loss
Of everything that had been missed
So used to feeling the spirit sink
She had not felt her own heart's wish
